When Less Vehicle Does More
What if one of the easiest ways to improve a council fleet isn’t simply changing the fuel — but reconsidering the size of vehicle being used in the first place?
That was the opportunity behind our recent MEV XL demonstration at Bracknell Forest Council.
The team had the chance to experience the vehicle first-hand and consider where a compact, all-electric utility vehicle could support everyday council operations.
For organisations managing highways, parks, open spaces, property assets and other public services, there are countless daily movements involving people, tools, equipment and materials. Bracknell Forest Council’s Place Directorate alone oversees areas including highways, transport networks, open spaces, parks and property assets.
Not every one of those journeys needs a conventional van.
That’s where the MEV XL creates an interesting opportunity — providing practical carrying capability and manoeuvrability in a smaller, quieter, zero-tailpipe-emission package.
Importantly, this fits into a much wider direction already being taken by Bracknell Forest. The council has transitioned part of its fleet to electric and its Climate Change Strategy includes plans to replace cars and small vans with EVs while working towards net-zero council emissions as close to 2030 as possible.
The demonstration therefore wasn’t simply about driving another electric vehicle. It was about identifying the jobs where less vehicle could deliver more efficiency.
Because sometimes fleet improvement starts with one simple question:
Do we really need something bigger?
